The city of ruinsJun 2022
Ruin means disappearance and disillusionment. However, destruction is an inevitable part of human progress, as what was first becomes ruin, then disappears and is then rebuilt in the future.
Thus, in my view, the city's state of construction and ruin alternate in a repetitive existence.

We live in a de facto ruin. My video projects a collage of human faces, mechanics and architecture onto the abandoned buildings of a city, anthropomorphising and giving a ‘voice’ to the dying ruins. By incorporating videos of collapsing buildings I emphasise the cyclical relationship between construction and destruction in urban development.

The life of an object as birth and finally destruction and disappearance is a linear, simple and immediate concept. From an eastern point of view, the line is replaced by a circle, and in a continuous cycle a thing can be regenerated after its disappearance.

Heidegger writes in his Concept of Time that ‘the past is the present that is past, the future is the present that has not yet come’, arguing that time is circular rather than linear, so that in its totality the city, construction and destruction actually coexist at the same time.

A ‘wreck’ in the form of a ‘Exists as “new” in the form of a “wreck”’.
