Reflective sheeting AUG 2024
Reflective fabrics are visual metaphors for the ephemeral nature of human intervention. Illuminated in the dark, but fleeting, fabric surfaces are suspended or covered by trees, capturing and reflecting light, their essence dependent on the presence of external light, symbolising the fact that man-made elements often rely on external forces to exert their influence, while nature itself is self-sufficient and eternal.

Trees are rooted in the earth and symbolise resilience and continuity. They testify to the ephemeral brilliance of reflective fabrics, yet they do not change. Trees represent the enduring patience of nature, able to absorb human intrusion and continue to exist after these interventions have disappeared. The tension between the reflective fabric and the trees becomes a visual dialogue about time, about what is ephemeral and what is eternal.

This ephemeral and eternal relationship prompts us to reflect on the wider implications of our relationship with the environment. It raises the question of how long both physical objects such as reflective fabrics and large-scale interventions such as urban development will remain in the landscape before they are absorbed or extinguished by nature. Are these actions just a flash in the pan or will they have a wider and more lasting impact?
